What is a dental crown?

A crown is a cap-shaped dental restoration that covers up imperfections and protects your teeth against decay and future damage. Not only does a dental crown reshape your tooth, but it also makes chewing easier thanks to the added strength it provides.

Placed over your natural tooth, a dental crown is recommended if you have a:

  • Severely discolored tooth
  • Misshapen tooth
  • Missing tooth
  • Dental implant
  • Fractured tooth
  • Cracked tooth
  • Large filling

There are several types of crowns to choose from, including metal, porcelain, ceramic, and gold. Dr. Yesina helps decide which option suits your lifestyle and budget best.

How does a dental crown work?

Once you decide on a dental crown, X-rays and scans are taken of your teeth, gums, and surrounding bone. If everything looks healthy, Dr. Yesina then files your tooth to make room for your new crown.

The next step is to take impressions of your teeth to create your customized crown. The crown fabrication process takes approximately two to three weeks, during which time Dr. Yesina will fit you for a temporary crown.

At your follow-up appointment, the temporary crown is removed and replaced with your permanent crown. The new crown must then be adjusted and cemented into place to fit perfectly. After the crown is cemented, it will look and feel exactly like your natural teeth.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a restoration designed to replace the gaps left behind by missing teeth. Much like an architectural bridge, the gap in your smile is filled in by a prosthetic tooth, or pontic, and held together by two neighboring teeth, referred to as abutments.

Replacing a missing tooth is recommended to improve your bite, maintain good oral hygiene, and prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of position. When gaps are left behind, they often result in a bad bite. Misaligned bites lead to serious dental concerns, such as gum disease and TMJ.

How does a dental bridge work?

Much like the dental crown process, you will first visit Irina Yesina for initial X-rays and scans to ensure your mouth is healthy enough to support your new bridge. Next, your abutment teeth must be filed down to make room for their new dental crowns. These crowns will help provide support for your pontic. Once your teeth have been prepared, impressions are made to serve as models for your bridge.

You must be fitted for a temporary crown or bridge to protect your prepared teeth while your permanent bridge is fabricated. At your second appointment, the temporary restoration is removed and replaced with your permanent one.

When cared for properly, dental crowns and bridges can last for years, providing much-needed support and protection for your teeth. To find out if crowns or bridges are right for you, call Irina Yesina, DDS, or book an appointment online today.
